If you have been looking for a light-hearted take on romance, Sanam Re 2 is the perfect way to spend your evening. The movie stars Pulkit Samrat as Aditya and Yami Gautam as Renu. The film follows a love that blossoms in an unfortunate situation, and it tackles issues surrounding relationships with respect and maturity. Renu's father, Ajay Mehra (played by Atul Kulkarni), steals from his company to feed her family when she is young, causing her to grow up with a mistrustful attitude towards men. Despite this, Aditya and Renu fall in love, but a divorcee and a girl from a financially-struggling family don't have it easy. The movie handles the issues that arise from an inter-class relationship very tactfully, avoiding cheap melodrama and misplaced comedy. The scenes are cleanly shot with respect for the actors' space. In fact, the scenes are so well made that they look as though they were taken from a larger movie budget. Renu's character is wholly believable as someone who has been blindsided by her father's betrayal of trust, whereas Aditya evolves gradually throughout the film – going from immaturity to full responsibility – which makes him seem more real. Ajay Mehra is the prime reason for this film's triumph. His despairing attitude, upon realising what his actions have caused him to lose, is so moving that you can't help but root for him. These scenes are some of the best of the movie and I'd even call them Oscar-worthy! The cinematography is excellent and the songs and music do not draw you out of the story, but rather add to it. The chemistry between Pulkit Samrat and Yami Gautam is real and believable, though some aspects of Renu's character may make you question her values on occasion (ie her relationship with Shikhar). The entire cast deserves praise, but our two leads are especially brilliant. The movie is a pleasant watch and an enjoyable break from the usual run of action-packed Bollywood films. Watch it for its great story, well-written dialogue and good acting. Pulkit Samrat has shown that he has what it takes to be a Bollywood leading man, and Yami Gautam is also excellent as the spirited female lead. If you enjoy this film I would also recommend watching Pyaar Ka Punchnama 1 & 2 (2011), which follows the same sort of relationship themes but with stronger characters and funnier script. Sanam Re 2 is a good movie that you can watch on a rainy night or a sunny afternoon. A movie that will leave you happy and satisfied, yet not overdone. The movie will release this Friday, July 7th.
